I recently worked with another comedian and we started talking about the best and worst people with whom we\u2019ve had to work.<\/span><\/p>\n

My list is made up of legitimately terrible people.\u00a0 I don\u2019t care if they\u2019re funny or not.\u00a0 They\u2019re people who off stage are monsters.\u00a0 One lied about having cancer to milk her friends and the community out of money.\u00a0 Another bullied the staff at a club and then corner the 16 year old girl working the box office into a corner threatening to show her \u201can old man\u2019s dick\u201d.\u00a0 Two really disgusting people.<\/span><\/p>\n

My coworker had Michael Winslow from Police Academy on his list.\u00a0 I was surprised.\u00a0 I met Michael twice and worked with him once.\u00a0 Both times, I found him to be exceptionally cool.\u00a0 Granted, my coworker\u2019s anecdotal evidence was kind of scummy.\u00a0 He said he was working at a bar with Winslow.\u00a0 Winslow tipped the bartender a couple of bucks in a tip jar and when the bartender turned away, Winslow took one of the dollars back.<\/span><\/p>\n

In all fairness, there have been times when I felt I over tipped and after getting bad service wish I could have taken some of the money back.\u00a0 Still, even if this is a case of being stingy, it didn\u2019t affect my coworker and it\u2019s not the worst thing in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

I first met Michael Winslow years and years ago at a club in Detroit.\u00a0 My friend was hosting the show and I really wanted to see it.\u00a0 I grew up on the Police Academy movies.\u00a0 Some of the first boobs I saw were in the Police Academy movies.\u00a0 It was a significant part of my childhood.<\/span><\/p>\n

I guess I should back up.\u00a0 If you\u2019re not up to speed, Michael Winslow is the sound effects guy from the Police Academy movies and Spaceballs.<\/span><\/p>\n

I had a joke in my act at the time (it\u2019s still there from time to time) that called for me to make a Wookiee noise on stage.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t do it.\u00a0 After the show I told Winslow of my problem.\u00a0 He told me to roll my tongue at the back of my mouth and make sort of a yawning noise.\u00a0 I can\u2019t do that with my tongue.\u00a0 I have permanently swollen tonsils that were never removed and I\u2019d throw up or at the very least gag.\u00a0 Me gagging would be very unpleasant to anyone who would have to watch.\u00a0 Trust me, I catch myself in the mirror sometimes when brushing my teeth.\u00a0 It\u2019s probably a good thing I was born straight.\u00a0 I\u2019d make a terrible gay boyfriend.\u00a0 I\u2019d just play with the tip.\u00a0 I\u2019d be the girlfriend of boyfriends!<\/span><\/p>\n

So I couldn\u2019t do the Wookiee noise the \u201cright\u201d way, so Winslow offered to have lunch with me the next day and work on it.\u00a0 We went out to lunch, he taught me an effective alternate way to make the noise and my memory is that he picked up the tab.<\/span><\/p>\n

Years later my friend Jeff and I were doing a run of one nighter comedy shows down in Florida.\u00a0 We had a week night booked at some little dive bar that did comedy.\u00a0 The booker had to cancel because Winslow was going to be in town and wanted that date.\u00a0 That happens in comedy.\u00a0 You get bumped for bigger names.\u00a0 When Winslow found out it was me who got bumped, he told the booker that I was welcome to host the show for the same pay that I was supposed to get for headlining it.\u00a0 I kind of feel like that money came out of Winslow\u2019s pay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That day, Jeff and I got to Florida, which is where Winslow lives now, and had a pizza party with his family before the show.\u00a0 I\u2019ve found Michael Winslow to be generous, the exact opposite snapshot that my coworker last weekend had.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s the thing about meeting people whether they be famous or not.\u00a0 You never know who they are based on one interaction.\u00a0 Maybe they were having a bad day.\u00a0 Who knows?\u00a0 \u00a0I drive for Lyft in Los Angeles to supplement my income.\u00a0 It\u2019s a ride sharing application that basically turns you and your car into a cabbie and taxi.\u00a0 Most of my passenger reviews rave about how personable I am and that they really enjoyed my sense of humor.\u00a0 One passenger flagged me for not being friendly enough.\u00a0 Maybe I wasn\u2019t that ride.\u00a0 I don\u2019t remember.\u00a0 It\u2019s possible.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been under a lot of stress and driving in Los Angeles doesn\u2019t help!<\/span><\/p>\n

I guess my point is that 1) sometimes you can\u2019t get to know who a person is in a snapshot interaction, 2) I\u2019m still angry about my one negative review and 3) I know Michael Winslow.<\/span><\/p>\n
