HOLY SH*T KID! COMICS!

or

The road to Comic-con International Part 3

We’ve already gone over how less and less of Comic-Con International has anything to do with actual comic books, and how, at our booth anyway, we would be drawing a line in the sand and focusing on our creative tour de force COMIC BOOK Arsenic Lullaby.  We would be one of a few others representing and proving that comic books are not only a unique medium capable of storytelling and connecting in a way other mediums cannot, but take second place to no other stories in any other form for sheer entertainment.  Which is why the recent post I saw from Slave Labor Graphics was so disappointing.

SLGFAIL

I wouldn’t give the credit to them that calling this “tactics” or a “strategic retreat” would convey, but call it outright foolishness.  They have wasted space promoting the ability to make a crappy souvenir one could get at a kiosk outside any tourist trap, instead of promoting the decade and more string of some of the greatest independent books ever published.  Work they should be pound of and that stands up fine against anything else at the show, comic book or otherwise. Work like, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, created by Johnen Vasquez who went onto create Invader Zimm. Work like Lenore, created by Roman Dirge, who went on to write for Invader Zim, has been on countless other projects and who’s style inspired the wave of “cute but horrific” type illustrators that have come since.  These are just a few of the feathers in their cap…and they choose to promote the fact that they now own a standard t-shirt printer.  They ain’t even promoting it as “customized shirts of scenes from our comics”, they are just flat out promoting it as if they were any other never to be worn, soon to be thrown out souvenir.   Come on guys…WTF?! You have books that were responsible for changing the  pop culture itself and you are spreading the word about shitty souvenirs?

pathetic

Does Slave Labor intend to become a t-shirt printer? Will they make their money by producing custom t-shirts at concerts, state fairs, and various parades and community events? Are they going to convert an ice cream truck and go to community vigils for victims of violence and sell the XXL white t-shirts with pictures of the victim and “R.I.P. (insert name of drive by victim here)”?   Because if that is not the long term plan , then being at the largest comic book convention in the world and not making every single notice an effort to grow your readership, of your groundbreaking and amazing comic books…is flat out counterproductive.  There will be 150,000 people coming through that door…you want to grow your readership?  Make some of the unconverted into NEW readers of comic books? Show them your books. Help yourself and help the medium

sigh…

Fine, I’ll do it myself.

WE at booth 2200 will be showing off ARSENIC LULLABY COMIC BOOKS

VDJsquare

EISNER NOMINATED, HARVEY AWARD NOMINATED, NOMINATED FOR THE COMICDOM AWARD IN EUROPE, SEEN IN MAD MAGAZINE AND ON COMEDY CENTRAL, KING OF DARK HUMOR, CULT FAVORITE ARSENIC muther f*cking LULLABY.

We will have an ash can collection of ALL NEW WORK, with a sketch variant back cover.  On it you can have the illustrator of the book itself (that’s me) , illustrate a sketch in front of your eyes.  That’s why you come to a show…to see the people who made things.  I will be there ALL FIVE DAYS.  (admittedly my drawin’ hand might not be in the greatest shape by the last day so…get the early for the best sketches)

onlinecthulhLIMITED

We will have a collection of our best work from the magazine sized issues ( things that were published after, and so did not appear in the giant omnibus).

You will be able to see original artwork from this series, which was ALL done by hand WITH AN INK-BRUSH.  You really need to see it in person, you won’t believe it was all done with a brush.

…did I just say “you won’t believe”, like some dumbass click bait post?  let me try again.

You will be able to see original artwork from the series, which was all done by hand with an ink brush, and see the how work done old school just simply stands apart from the rest.

…that was clunky, you get the idea.

WE MAKE COMIC BOOKS. We make comic books that are as good or better than anything else in that show.
